W1_Reimagining Daily Objects

 

Reimagining daily objects sounds like a compilation of daily struggles and grumpy grumbles from everyone towards a particular item, amending it, and executing it into reality. Recently, I just discovered that one single electronic device is adequate to substitute the presence of paper, pens, pencils, and even limited memory spaces in humans’ brains by recording every important information on their respective devices. Still, the same scenario does not happen on the stylus pen that is attached to the electronic devices. Several amendments can be implemented to enhance the feasibility and the performance of the stylus pen to eliminate the necessity of bringing an extra pencil case to school.

First, a rough sketch of the design of the stylus pen is displayed in Figure 1.0. With the exchange of materials such as thermochromic plastic. Thermochromic materials can alter their reflectance to absorb solar energy in warm weather and reflect it in the cold seasons. When the temperature drops below their transition temperature, thermochromic materials retain their color; however, when they rise above it, they become white (Pacheco-Torgal et al., 2017). Thermochromic plastic can help to detect the surrounding temperature, act as an indicator to alert users to stay hydrated, and conduct sunscreen protection as shown in Figure 1.1.

Inspired by the multifunction ballpoint pen as shown in Figure 1.2, there will be only one pen required to be used for writing which will be further elaborated on and explained in the next paragraph. The top of the pen will have a button to switch between the eraser, glue dispenser, pen, and stylus pen’s tip accordingly. The cap of the button is a twist-off design so that users can customize their unique signature or name chop hiding within the button cap.

Next, the stylus pen, the tip will be designed with the combination of a camera. The camera will inspect the color that the owner prefers. By placing the camera of the stylus pen above the preferred color, the camera will capture the color so that the user can use the specific color to write or illustrate on their own devices. If users encounter a wrongly written character or illustration, they can get a brand new canvas by replicating the color of the background of the paper to cover the errors. Just like how a bath bomb can transform into different colors when dissolving in water, further changing the color of the bath water as shown in Figure 1.3.

            As referring to the paragraph above, this part will explain the functions of the remaining utensils except for the stylus pen. Firstly, the glue dispenser uses the exterior look of a pen ink cartridge as in Figure 1.4. Offering users a more precise placement of the glue without worrying about leaking issues. Nonetheless, a pen will be provided as well as most university students are no longer using pencils, most of them prefer pencils more than pens as this stylus pen comes with an eraser to correct the errors made on paperwork.

Next, the cavity within the pen can be utilized as the side of the pen can be transformed into an eraser debris collector inspired by the motion detect roller beneath a computer mouse as in Figure 1.5. The side of the eraser debris collecting cartridge will be attached with several tiny magnetic wheels to ensure the functionality of both the eraser residue collector’s roller and the attachment ability of the stylus pen to the device as presented in Figure 1.6. The roller will be placed on the surface with eraser debris, rolling towards a certain direction will make the debris collected by the eraser debris collector as displayed in Figure 1.7.

When I was brainstorming, every thought started from a Vaseline lip balm displayed in Figure 1.8. Although it mainly serves as a lip balm, there are multiple ways to use a Vaseline lip balm including for skincare and lubricating. It was multifunctional, hence the same concept applied to my new stylus pen design, multifunctional. I proceeded to browse through my pencil case’s items and figure out what features could be fused into one single stylus pen. After days of illustration and brainstorming, I have come up with a multifunctional stylus pen design with the details and functions I mentioned above.
